I have been in love with yoga for many years. I began to practice it for stress reduction and relaxation purposes. I was totally hooked from my first class. My lifestyle really changed over the years. I have learned so much about the restorative and healthful benefits of a yoga practice. It's a profound study and practice.

Unique and magical in how it can transform a person from a state of imbalance to a place of wholeness and well-being, ypga has been my therapy, my space for healing for most of my adult years. It has been a true light towards quiding me more inwards, to my center, my source. All shapes an sizes of people can participate.

It doesn't matter what is happening in your life, there is always a way to structure a practice for your individual needs. There is so much about this sacred study. Everyone should try it, many times with many different teachers and see for themselves.

As a yoga teacher I am trained in the Iyengar tradition. I appreciate many different styles of yoga but usually my classes are structured from and Iyengar understanding. Sequencing in a particular way, opening poses preparing for deeper holding of poses. Very much a strengthening stretch hatha yoga style.

I do include resting poses and inversions to round out a class. I focus on creating a balanced, restorative, alignment oriented, challenging class. Strength, flexibility and alignment for the body; clarity and focus for the mind, ease and peace for the nervous system and inner body, a happy heart and radiant spirit.

Iyengar yoga pose Iyengar Yoga

"Iyengar Yoga is a method of Hatha Yoga developed over a period of 60 years by B.K.S. Iyengar of Pune, India. He is one of the world's most acclaimed yoga masters. His basic principles of movement are compatible with current developments in the field of physical therapy and in other modern bodywork disciplines. Combining classical yoga traditions with innovative refinements, Mr. Iyengar's approach is marked by dynamism and precision."

Iyengar classes are a strong practice. In a Iyengar class you could expect to focus on the details and alignment in postures. Yoga props, developed by Iyengar, are used to teach the students to do the poses safely and with understanding. There is often a standing pose sequence which is the foundation to the Iyengar method and students continue to practice them at every level. Also, expect to be introduced to, handstand (Adho Mukha Vrksana), elbo balance (Pincha Mayurasana), headstand (Sirsasana) and shoulder stand (Sarvangasana) and many variations thereof depending on the level of the class.

Prenatal and Postnatal Yoga

In 1999 Deborah established the pre and postnatal program at 7th Heaven Yoga in Berkeley California, which she continues to direct and teach in. Her prenatal yoga classes, Wednesdays 6-7:30 pm and Saturdays 11:15am-12: 45, are taught from an Iyengar style approach, focusing on body alignment with the use of props. She received a great deal of her prenatal and restorative yoga training from yoga teacher Judith Hansen lasater when she was pregnant with her children in the late 70’s and early 80’s.

Deborah also weaves into her classes the HypnoBirthing® Philosophy, that women’s bodies are perfectly designed to give birth comfortably. That birthing should not have to be a dreaded, difficult and medical event. She prepares women through yoga, breath work, relaxation and mind set, how to release their fears and trust their bodies, to plan for the most natural, gentle and best birth experience they can.

Is very popular these days because it has so much to offer the pregnant woman. This ancient practice of hatha yoga is a complete system for total health and well being of the body, mind and emotions. It relieves many of the common discomforts of pregnancy. The postures increase flexibility, circulation and strength, focus the mind and release tension and stress, enhancing relaxation, calming the emotions and enabling deep regular breathing patterns. Thus, a sense of total well being is experienced. What better way to grow another body within, when one is in harmony with its own.

Post Natal yogaPostnatal Yoga

Another major transition for women. This class is designed to help the new mother get her body back from the demands of pregnancy. Toning and strengthening the uterus, abdominals'and back, relieving and aligning nursing shoulders and upper body, supplying a place to unhook, relax and regenerate, move their bodies, focus their minds and rest for a moment. This is a space to give to themselves when so much of their energy is righteously going to the newborn, creating a supportive space to be with other new mothers and their babies. Baby helpers are often available in the classes.

Inward workout

A Slower more gently paced yoga and meditation. Come back to center, to calm, to balance. Ease into a more relaxed approach to yoga, but not passive and often very deep. Unwind and relax, release pain, pressures and expectations. We will explore asana, breath awareness, resting poses, internal cleansing and meditation. Do RESTorative yoga, at least some of the time, for greater health and wellbeing.
