Deborah SalibyI began practicing yoga in 1975 at the YWCA for stress reduction during my college years.  From my very first yoga class I experienced the profound effects of integration. I felt myself again and very relaxed. In those days yoga was not so popular and it was more difficult finding a teacher. I did find a great teacher in my hometown in Massachusetts, Sue Luby.  She introduced to me the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar.  I learned so much about posture, alignment and how to strengthen my hyper-extended joints, and my body image increased greatly. After graduating from college at U Mass Lowell with a Psychology degree I wanted to deepen my practice and understanding of yoga.  I was ready to do some traveling and my teacher directed me to a school in San Francisco,  “The Institute for Yoga Teacher Education “later renamed The Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco.

I graduated from IYI in 1982 and continued to study with many popular Iyengar teachers throughout the United States over the years. I practiced many forms of eastern and western meditation and was trained as a clairvoyant reader and energy healer for 16 years. The consistent practice of meditation over a long period of time was a great calming balm for my active mind. Meditation practice along with asana (posture) and pranayama (breath control) has given me the tools to cultivate a healthy body and mind.

In 1995 I gave birth to a beautiful boy child, Benjamin. In 1997 I was certified as a Hypnotherapist and in 2000 a HypnoBirthing® instructor.  I now work regularly with pregnant women in yoga and hypnosis preparing them for an easier and more natural birthing experience.

Some of my primary yoga teachers have been and still are, Judith Lasater, Donald Moyer, (The Yoga Room in Berkeley), Melinda Perlee, Mary Dunn, Aadil Palkhivala and Ramanand Patel.  In 2001 I attended the Iyengar convention with Geeta Iyengar in Pasadena Ca. In 2006 I attended the Iyengar convention with B.K.S. Iyengar in Estes Park, Colorado.

I continue to take classes at The Iyengar Yoga Institute in San Francisco. I am presently studying with my Mentor and dear friend Janet Macleod, and the Abode of Iyengar Yoga, Manouso Manos. I also attend classes with Jaki and Allen Nett. In the last five years my teachers have been, Ramanand Patel, Donald Moyer, Bobby Clennell, and Patricia Walden at B.K.S. Iyengar Yoga Mala in Cambridge Ma. When in Portland Oregon I take classes with Julie Lawrence at The Julie Lawrence Iyengar Yoga Center of Portland.

I feel very fortunate to be a student of this profound practice of YOGA and all it entails and continues to reveal to me everyday.

"I have attended Deborah Saliby's Saturday Iyengar classes for 7 years. I see that many of her pre-natal students have written about her skills as  a teacher in that area.  I wanted to urge yogis who are stepping up to a more advanced level to try Deborah's 2-3 level Sat class.  If you have not experienced the Iyengar style, it may seem "odd" - should I say slow and precise.  But it is just that, that makes it so informative.  Early in my practice, ego made me think that if I could do more vigorous and complex  poses, I was a better yogi.  Now I see that I learned many things sloppily/wrong. I am grateful that Deborah is helping me to build a sustainable practice so that I can do yoga for a lifetime.  She is a hands-on teacher for all her students.  Her knowledge is extensive (25+ years as a yogi) and she is still studying with masters, so we get the benefit of that."
